# Sheet Metal Workers Local 512

> Chartered in 1950, SMW Local 512 represents skilled sheet metal workers and roofers across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Sheet Metal Workers Local 512 (SMW Local 512) is a chartered affiliate of SMART,
the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation
Workers. It is a province-wide local based in St. John's, Newfoundland and
Labrador, chartered in 1950 and still the only sheet metal local in the
province.

## Apprenticeship

Entry is through a registered, paid apprenticeship: four years and 7,200 hours,
combining block-release in-school training with on-the-job hours under
signatory contractors, leading to Red Seal certification. Level 1 is normally
satisfied by a 34-week pre-employment program at an accredited Newfoundland and
Labrador institution; block release then runs eight, eight, seven and six weeks
at the end of each year. No prior experience is required, and Grade 12 or
equivalent is the standard entrance requirement. Apply through the Union Hall in
St. John's.
