How do I become a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 512?
No experience is required to start. You join through the apprenticeship: a four-year, 7,200-hour program that combines in-school block-release training with on-the-job hours under signatory contractors, leading to Red Seal certification. Start on our apprenticeship page or contact the union hall.
What work do Local 512 members do?
Members work province-wide across Newfoundland and Labrador in HVAC, fabrication, architectural sheet metal, manufacturing and metal roofing, on major builds from the Health Sciences Centre and Hibernia to Hebron and Muskrat Falls.
How long is the sheet metal apprenticeship?
Four years (7,200 hours), combining in-school block-release training with on-the-job hours under signatory contractors, leading to Red Seal certification.
What benefits do members receive?

Is Local 512 part of a larger union?
Yes. Chartered in 1950, Local 512 is an affiliate of SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers.
How does dispatch work at Local 512?
Members in good standing sit on the out-of-work list, and new members register at the hall once dues are current. When a signatory contractor places a call, the hall dispatches from that list under the agreement's rules: seniority, classification, and name-hire where it applies. What safety tickets do I need on a Newfoundland job site?
Most Newfoundland and Labrador sites expect the standard cards at mobilization: WHMIS, fall protection, confined space, first aid, H2S Alive and BST. WHMIS has no fixed legal expiry but sites commonly want a refresh every one to three years, and confined space is usually refreshed every three years or per site policy. Which additional tickets you need depends on the scope you are dispatched to. The hall books and renews these through the training fund.
What is architectural sheet metal?
It is the exterior metal envelope of a building: cladding, flashing, metal roofing, soffit and custom fabricated panels. It sits alongside HVAC, fabrication, manufacturing and metal roofing in the work Local 512 members do across Newfoundland and Labrador.
